St. George’s Caye, Belize, is a scenic private island with overwater bungalows near the Caribbean’s largest, and the world’s second-largest, barrier reef.
We think it offers adventure and excitement on the one hand (it is a popular vacation spot for divers for example) and peace and tranquility on the other (honeymooners come here too).
The food is highly praised, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included in the room rate, the service is great and the atmosphere is relaxed, warm, and friendly.
It sells itself as a luxury resort but we think the accommodation, including the overwater bungalows, though charming and comfortable, may be a tad underwhelming for the price range.
Despite the oversell, though, we think the resort, the island, and the general atmosphere of the place make it a unique and very enjoyable place to spend time in.
Rustic Overwater Bungalows, Plus Beachfront & Garden View Suites
We have a choice of broadly similar thatched roof cabanas, all doubles/twins in three different locations – Overwater, Beachfront & Garden, with the Oceanfront being the most expensive, the Garden cheapest, and the Overwater in the middle price range.
In the vast majority of resorts, the overwater accommodation is the most expensive choice but not at St. George’s.
This is, we imagine, because they are quite closely huddled together, in a half circle facing the sea, and therefore offer less privacy than other cabanas.
Some people may like this almost sociable setting but if it’s a relaxing romantic sojourn you’re after then you’d be far better off in a Garden or Oceanfront Bungalow, with the latter being our favorite.
All the cabanas are pretty much the same size (roughly 380 sq ft.) and design and are rustic, romantic, and cozy with thatched roofs and lots of native wood furniture and fittings.
We have air-con and a mini fridge here but not much more in terms of modern facilities.
Wifi for example is only available in the main building. Outside all have nice verandahs with hammocks and seating.
The overwaters are just offshore and don’t have private access to the water, you can go for a dip though by just stepping out the front door.

Note: There is a minimum stay of four nights.
Adventure on the Reef: Diving, Snorkeling & Island Spa
The island has two beaches, the one on the eastern side being the largest and where most people spend more time in.
The resort also has a saltwater swimming pool.
You can snorkel just offshore – snorkel gear as well as paddle boards Hobie cats etc. are all free to use, and you are entitled to one free scuba diving session.
You can organize various excursions and boat trips etc. from the resort to the Belize Reef of course but also tours of other islands and cultural tours on the mainland for example.
They have a small spa center that does various treatments including Swedish, deep tissue, and hot stone massages.
You can enjoy one there, in your room, or out on the beach if you so prefer.
We think you’ll like the food here and all room rates come with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.
Meals are social affairs too with a communal atmosphere and where you’ll find it easy to get to know your fellow guests.
Sometimes dinner can be a barbecue party on the beach and people might linger with cold drinks at the bar in the evenings, though we think St. George’s overall certainly isn’t a party place.
Location: Super Private Hideaway, but near Belize City
St George’s Caye is 7 miles off the coast of Belize City, the nation’s capital – a 20-minute boat ride.
When flying into Belize International Airport a resort representative will be there to greet and escort you to the marina for your shuttle boat transfer, all free of charge.
If already in Belize and making your own way just let the resort know and their representative can meet you anywhere in Belize City.
Guest Reviews: “Tropical Island Vibes with 5-Star Service”
“Start to finish this resort was top notch service and care! Everything is handled, you want to go fishing, just ask, you want to go scuba, just ask, you want a massage, just say, you want to try your hand at sailing, just let someone know. Tours of Mayan ruins, zip lining, cave tubing, you can do it all! And they handle everything just show up! Relax on the beach and on a whim decide to go kayak and see the manatee., or take your coffee watching the sunrise on new years day! Best vacation spot will be back!….”
“From the moment we arrived we were treated with kindness and a genuine sense that the staff primary focus was ensuring we had a great time at their resort. Your days belong to you, you can do as much or as little as you want. We lounged on the beach, sailed, caught barracudas and red snappers, saw dolphins in the sea, swam with manatees while snorkeling, and got to ride a jungle river to the area’s magnificent Mayan temples. All in four days. The food was incredible. We feel relaxed, we spent four days in paradise. Quite literally our best vacation ever…..”
