Why We Like It: The Fiji Marriott, Momi Bay is an exclusive 5-star resort near Nadi, and the Momi WW2 Gun Site, with an idyllic lagoon and ocean setting. It also has an array of fantastic facilities, premium quality accommodation, including some top-of-the-range overwater bungalows that we found surprisingly good value. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: The Marriott has a mixture of rooms at the main hotel building, all of which come with either a balcony or a patio, plus a mixture of bures (traditional Fijian-style straw and wood huts) both on land and over water. They come in various sizes with the largest, at over 800 square feet/74 square meters, being their ‘Royal Lagoon’ overwater bungalow. All the accommodation choices are 5-star standard and have a modern, minimalist chic style. Facilities include cable TV, air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, USB chargers, music systems, laptop safes, tea & coffee making facilities, and 24-hour room service. We find they have particularly nice bathrooms too with stand-alone bathtubs, rainfall showers, and luxury toiletries. Their hotel rooms may be some of the nicest in the country but for us a stay in one of their traditional Fijian, straw and wood bures is a whole different level of experience and worth the extra. This applies, even more so we think, to their plush overwater bungalows which have high vaulted ceilings, outdoor decks, and private access to the pristine waters below. The only negative we could see with the overwaters is that too much of the space is internal – a much larger outside deck would surely be preferable for most people. First opening its doors in May 2019, then acquired by the Marriott Hotel group in late 2021, Royalton Antigua is a classic 5 Star Caribbean all-inclusive that became home to Antigua’s first overwater bungalows. We think it offers opulence and luxury and has a choice setting on the clear, calm waters of Antigua’s Deep Bay, less than twenty minutes from St. John’s, and a half an hour from V. C. Bird International Airport. There are two resorts with overwater bungalows now in Antigua, among just a handful of other luxury overwater bungalows in the Caribbean. Both of them are Royalton properties. You can check out the other; Royalton Chic Resort here.   Overwater Bungalows: Spacious: 1442 sq. ft. with king bedroom, lounge, dining area, and terrace. Private perks: Infinity plunge pool, jacuzzi, glass floor, butler service. Luxury amenities: Aromatherapy, IPTV movies, pillow menu, twice-daily minibar restock. Restrictions: Children under 13 not allowed in overwater bungalows.   The overwater bungalows cover a full 1442 square feet and have king-size bedrooms, lounges (with sofa bed), dining areas, and gorgeous outdoor terraces overlooking the Caribbean. Why We Like It: The 5-star, adults-only Anantara Veli Resort has 67 chic overwaters in a sublime setting just half an hour by speedboat from Mali’s International Airport. The location is more private and secluded than many other overwater bungalows in The Maldives and is very much designed for romantic getaways. It is still just a two-minute speedboat shuttle to the busier (& family-friendly) Anantara Dhigu Resort across the lagoon. There, you’ll find a broad range of facilities and entertainment; restaurants, bars, shops, water sports, etc. Antara Veli also has facilities of its own though with tennis courts, a fitness center, an outdoor spa, and three very fine restaurants serving Japanese, Thai, and international food. The service here is consistently impeccable, and you are allowed as much, or as little, interaction with staff and other guests as you would like. Water Villas & Other Accommodation: You can choose between a classic water villa/overwater bungalow on the lagoon or an ocean bungalow set on a secluded cliff edge overlooking the ocean. All the accommodation choices are doubles and all come with a suitably grand king-size bed. Your choices among the water villas are: ‘standard’ 62 m² units with an outdoor sun deck and direct access to the lagoon. Deluxe units have about 30 m² of extra space plus some very special open-air bathrooms with terrazzo bathtubs overlooking the lagoon. The ‘superior’ water villas go a step further with a plunge pool overlooking the lagoon and a full 125 m² of space over two floors. Finally, there are the ‘Ocean Bungalows’, not overwater bungalows per se but their position on the edge of a small, secluded cliff directly over the ocean grants them a similar feel. They are broadly similar, too, in layout in size, to the superior overwater bungalows, also having that lovely plunge pool, but this time overlooking the Indian Ocean. Why We Like It: Just a ten-minute shuttle boat ride from Motu Mute Airport, and fifteen minutes across the lagoon from the town of Vaitape, lies the little island of Tevairoa – the wondrous setting for the 4-star Le Bora Bora Pearl Resort’s overwater bungalows. We have a total of 80 accommodation units here, comprising overwater bungalows, beach villas, and garden villas, but feels rather small and like a boutique resort. I also think it feels more traditionally Polynesian than other resorts around Bora Bora, in terms of architecture, style, and general laid-back atmosphere. It is family-friendly, and has activities for children, but wouldn’t really define itself as such. I think it maintains well the tricky balance between keeping children content and offering the last word in a romantic experience. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: We have a choice between garden suites, beachfront suites, or classic overwater bungalows at Le Bora Pearl. The suites are nestled among tropical plants, have their own private pool, and, being able to sleep up to five, are the most suitable for families. The beachfront suites have a private hot tub/jacuzzi and some lovely views across the sands. For us of course the overwater bungalows have that extra romantic feel, plus direct access to the water and the resort’s coral nurseries. All the accommodation is top luxury hotel standard, boasting all modern facilities, while the design and decor generally display even more Polynesian influence than other Bora Bora resorts and lots of sleek wood paneling and traditional art pieces. The Tevairoa Restaurant & Bar serves up international food with Polynesian influences and has native music and dance performances on most evenings. At the Tavai Spa, nestled away in tropical foliage and surrounded by lily ponds, we have all sorts of health and beauty treatments: Vichy body scrubs, traditional ‘Taurumi’ massages, hot stone massages with fragrant monoi oil, and more. Why We Like It: Maitai Polynesia is a charming little overwater bungalow resort in the south of Bora Bora, by Matira Point Beach, and just below the InterContinental Le Moana. It offers the cheapest luxury overwater bungalow experience in Bora Bora. This might be possible because they seem to have pared back some of the more expensive, but maybe unnecessary for many people frills. By that we mean things such as a swimming pool, private airport transfer to the resort (though there is a private transfer from Vaitape, and you can get there easily, and cheaply, by public ferry from the airport) and an excess of choice in terms of restaurants, bars, and other facilities. For a lot of people, including us, this is a decent trade-off, especially seeing that guests at Maitai have complimentary access to the facilities of the InterContinental just a few minutes walk away. Note: Maitai is placed in our adults-only category as, though children can stay in some other parts of the resort, the overwater bungalows are adults-only. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: We have a nice range of options here – overwater bungalows, bungalows on the beach or in the gardens of the resort, and some rooms farther back and higher up which have lovely ocean views. All are stylish, spacious, and super comfortable and include air conditioning, satellite TV, and a minibar plus the overwater bungalows have a glass table and floor to allow guests to watch the sea life below their feet. The overwater bungalows are great value but they might now have the same wow factor as the other resorts in Bora Bora, being quite close to the shore and relatively close to one other. Resort Facilities & Things to Do: The resort is relatively small but has two bars and two high-quality (and good value) restaurants serving Tahitian, French, and international cuisine. One of them – the Fare Tama’a Maitai restaurant has a lovely setting right on the beachfront and you can also enjoy cocktails at the Verandah Bar which has stunning views over the lagoon. We have no spa here but guests at Maitai have free access to all the facilities of the neighboring larger resort of InterContinental Le Moana, and the Intercontinental Thalasso, the latter having an award-winning spa a short boat ride away.   W Maldives is a sophisticated 5-star, private (heart-shaped!) island overwater bungalow resort with cutting-edge design and facilities. It receives its fair share of international celebs and is a glamorous and fun place to hang out. Facilities include high-quality restaurants and bars, a sublime sauna & fitness center, and a water sports & dive center. The resort sits by what we consider the best house reef in the Maldives and you can admire a vast amount of sea life directly from your overater bungalow: reef sharks, angel fish, stingrays, and glow-in-the-dark plankton and jellyfish.   Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: Most of the accommodation units at W Maldives are overwater bungalows. Their entry-level overwater villas are listed as Fabulous Overwater Oasis and Spectacular Lagoon Oasis. Entry level or not these are incredible places to stay and we think they could be marketed as pretty much presidential suites in a lot of other resorts less extravagant than this. They are sleek and stylish and cover 1570 square feet/146 square meters of space which includes one double bedroom, a lounge with glass floor panels, a bathroom, and an outside terrace that has lounging space, a plunge pool, and direct access to the water below. The only difference as far as we could see between these two is that the ‘Spectacular Lagoon Oasis’ has an overwater hammock on the terrace and the ‘Fabulous Overwater Oasis’ doesn’t. For such a minor difference you’d expect them to be priced very similarly but for some reason, as we can see here at booking.com, the Spectacular Lagoon Oasis will cost you a couple of hundred dollars more per night. Nice feature but definitely not worth that much more, we feel. Then on to the Vice Presidential and Presidential Overwater Villas. These are jaw-dropping two-bedroom units that are enormously spacious, the former being 3476 square feet/323 square meters and the latter a full 5295 square feet/492 square meters. They share the same general facilities and features of the more er…’ basic’ villas, what you are mainly paying for here is their much greater space and a greater sense of privacy. On land, there are the Beach Villas which share the same touch of class and come as doubles with king-size beds or two twin beds. Thatch Caye is an all-inclusive, private island paradise with cozy Caribbean overwater bungalows 25 minutes by speedboat from mainland Belize. It is eco-friendly and has a kind of rustic, barefoot-chic vibe. It caters to no more than 30 people at any one time too and so feels relatively intimate and exclusive, but with a friendly, communal atmosphere. Numerous activities are offered at Thatch Caye and your days can be as busy or as peaceful and relaxed as you may wish.   Overwater Bungalows & On-Land Penthouses: Barefoot Luxury We have a choice of beach cabanas and overwater bungalows here. The latter are divided between Standard and Premium with the standard units being three bungalows sitting practically right beside each other just off the shore. Thus they’re really not ideal if privacy is what you’re after. But for a group of friends, if booked together, they could be perfect. We think the premium overwater bungalows on the other hand offer a huge amount of privacy. Though they are pretty much the same internally as the standard bungalows they have their own private walkway so feel very secluded. They don’t cost all that much more so we believe an upgrade to these premium bungalows will make sense to most people, especially those seeking a romantic getaway. Both have 320 sq. ft of nicely furnished and very comfortable space, including an outside terrace, so they’re not enormous but are certainly cozy and romantic. On shore, we have a choice of beach cabanas, divided into Standard, Premier, and Penthouse, with the Penthouse being the most desirable and most expensive. It is the largest at 441 sq ft and offers views over the open ocean from the terrace. Why We Like It: Veligandu Private Island, just twenty minutes by seaplane from Male Airport is, for us, probably the best value all-inclusive overwater bungalow resort in the Maldives. Though it lacks the full 5 Star wow factor of Lily Beach Resort or Ozen Maadhoo, for what we are getting here we might expect the prices to be almost double what they are. As such it is extremely popular and sees return visitors year after year.   Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: You have two main room categories at Veligandu – Beach Villas and Water Villas, all of which are doubles with king-size beds though you can order extra beds/cots for children. These are in turn sub-divided into standard and jacuzzi villas. We think none of these accommodation choices will disappoint though the jacuzzi villas, even disregarding the added jacuzzi on the terrace, are more spacious and open, and definitely worth the extra fee. All villas have that nice, traditional Pacific thatched roof look but inside they are modern and sleek. Amenities include satellite TV, Nespresso coffee machines, air con, generous minibars, and, if not a terrace jacuzzi outside then a spa bath in the bathroom inside. We always find that bathrooms are always a good marker of hotel room quality and here they impress, with the added bonus of an outdoor rain shower. The food is buffet style and there are various sections with different categories of food for guests to investigate as well as two live cooking stations. It is located right along the beach and has tables inside, on the large terrace outside, and with some tables directly on the sand. Dhonveli has a laid-back, boho chic atmosphere but if you want something a bit more formal you can try Madivaru, an elegant, intimate fine dining venue. Here it is mainly seafood, all of it a la carte and as far as we can gather consistently excellent. Dining at Madivaru is not covered by the all-inclusive package but a 20% discount is offered. Eclypse de Mar is an intimate, eco-friendly resort, with its own nature reserve in Bocas del Toro, along Panama’s east coast. It has tastefully designed and decorated, very Caribbean, overwater bungalows, just seven in total, which blend nicely with the deep jungle behind.   Eco-Friendly Overwater Bungalows & Jungle Treehouses Their overwater accommodation has two categories – the Standard Bungalows at 538 square feet/50 square meters and the larger, slightly more plush, Honeymoon Overwater Bungalows at 861 square feet/80 square meters. The latter has one king-size bedroom plus lounge while the former, though smaller, has two bedrooms, one double and one twin. We have seating areas inside and outside on the private terrace which offers direct access to the water (which is beautifully calm and clear), and inside they have glass floor panels to allow you to observe the abundant sea life below. We think you’ll find them super comfortable but this being a very much eco-friendly resort you will have to forgo some luxuries – No air-con just ceiling fans for example but, helped by the fresh breezes from the sea, they do the job well. There are no TVs or in-room fridges either though, and the WiFi can be quite weak in the overwater bungalows. Beyond the overwaters they have some rooms in the main building which have the same comfortable interiors and cozy, earthy feel. They have balconies equipped with hammocks and what they describe as a ‘sea view’ which in reality though is a view of the back of the overwater bungalows. They may be a little underwhelming but for us what certainly isn’t is the 3 bedroom, two-floor Sea Loft Villa which has great views over both the sea and the surrounding jungle. Most of it is, as you imagine completely wild but there are also easy trails around which can be negotiated without any kind of hiking gear. It is home to a huge array of fauna – sloths, monkeys, caiman, iguanas, etc. and a great many species of tropical birds. The fabulous, 5-Star Amanyara Turks & Caicos sits on a rocky shore overlooking the coral reefs of Point Marine National Park. The beach that fronts the resort, Malcolm’s Road Beach, is incredibly pristine and is surrounded by a full 100 acres of private estate, mostly lush tropical forest. The place feels peaceful and secluded, which, well, it certainly is, but we are still only 20 minutes from Providenciales International Airport here. Amanyara features Indonesian-inspired structures and villas, almost all built over the water or at the very least alongside the water. But in this case, not over the sea as is the most typical for traditional overwater bungalows, but over very placid, private ponds or pools.   Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: Your accommodation choices range in size from cozy one-bedroom overwater suite pavilions to really fabulous, two to six-bedroom, overwater villas. The terraces of each are shaded by eaves on three sides and have floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening out to their private pools. The villas are serviced by what they term a villa host, rather like a butler, and the three-to-six-bedroom villas also have their own personal chefs. Both the villas and the pavillions feature a nicely soothing combination of wood and cream colors, comfortable lounge furniture, and king-sized beds. We think you’ll probably find you’ll spend most of your time outdoors here though. The main restaurant’s delightful terrace is the place for breakfast. There we have a wide range of a la carte options, from crispy bacon to Thai kingfish Benedict, alongside a buffet of fresh fruit, cold meats, cheeses, pastries, muesli, yogurts, and fresh juices, Then there’s lunch at the Beach Club, where you can enjoy random dishes like gazpacho or wood-fired spicy pepperoni pizza with avocado relish. Some might skip the complimentary teas and coffees there and go straight for a champagne mojito or basil and cucumber gimlet. Accompanying your drinks can be all manner of delectable nibbles, and cigar enthusiasts can also enjoy a Davidoff Yamasa Robusto, available from the bar. Why We Like It: The enormous, 5 Star, Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson Resort, just south of Kuala Lumpur, is one of Malaysia’s most iconic resorts, and it has the largest number of overwater bungalows of any resort in the world. There are an astonishing 522 overwater of them stretching out nearly a mile into the Strait of Malacca in the shape of a hibiscus flower. On land too there are a further one hundred-plus guest villas. We think each water villa has been beautifully put together, with luxurious interiors, and outdoor decks with private plunge pools. The only negative we can see though is that with such a huge number of overwater bungalows together they are relatively close together and not as private as some people may like. The resort itself has excellent facilities we have to say, including a great choice of restaurants and snack bars. Spa facilities, a kid’s club, and a huge range of fun water and land-based sports activities are all here. Water Villas & Other Accommodation: So there are 522 overwater villas and a further 117 on-land villas divided into categories and price points depending on location, view (sea view or beach view), and size. For us the pick of the bunch at Lexis Hibiscus is of course the spectacular Presidential Suite, right at the tip of the hibiscus. It is a four-ensuite bedroom duplex covering a full 4,112 square feet (382 square meters) with an enormous living, and dining area, kitchen, and bar. It also has unobstructed sea views, two infinity pools, and an outdoor jacuzzi. They all come with king beds and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that open onto furnished outdoor decks with private plunge pools. We see the designers paid particular attention to the bathrooms – more spacious and luxurious than most they have double sinks, rainfall showers, steam rooms, and soaking tubs with sea views. They also have direct access to the terrace and the aforementioned private plunge pools. Mod cons include large TVs, WiFi, mini-fridges, and minibars. And all the overwater bungalows have that classic overwater feature we’ve grown to love – glass viewing panels in the floor to watch the marine life below. Why We Like It: Anantara The Palm Resort Dubai is a fabulous 5-star resort with 400 meters of private shoreline on Dubai’s world-famous Palm Jumeirah. We find it has tremendous facilities, including a very opulent spa, and its accommodation is seen as among the very best in the city. Even better for the Anantara is that it is the only resort in Dubai with overwater bungalows. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: They have a great selection of luxury accommodation – the above-mentioned overwater bungalows, or Over Water Villas as they describe them, being the star attraction (we recommend you book early if at all possible). Being such a top-class resort even their most ‘basic’ accommodation – the ‘Standard Rooms’ are neither basic nor standard, they cover 38 square meters/409 square feet and have balconies with a view over the lagoon. That being said though we think a relatively small step up in price can offer you more space and just that little bit of extra wow factor with a Premier or Deluxe Room. An further extra jump in price allows you to choose between apartments and very classy beach villas. Their 18 overwater bungalows though are the main attraction at Anantara The Palm and are designed and decorated to reflect the resort’s South East Asian theme. They stand out on the lagoon-like mini Thai temples and we think they are as striking inside as out with high vaulted ceilings and sleek furniture and fittings. They also all have that classic overwater bungalow feature we love – glass floor panels – to watch the underwater life. Why We Like It: The tropical gardens of the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa lie just five minutes from Tahiti Airport and not much more than ten from downtown Papeete. The super convenient location means it’s a place where many people get their very first experience of a classic Polynesian resort and an overwater bungalow stay. It is a large, fairly busy resort and you’ll find it more lively, both day and night (it’s got a 24-hour bar for example), than any similar resort on the likes of Bora Bora and Moorea. The overwater bungalows section though is more quiet and peaceful, relatively speaking, and so in some ways, you can have a romantic getaway or honeymoon while still being able to enjoy the buzz of a lively resort. You’ll find lots to do here with shops, fine restaurants, fun bars, a fabulous spa, and plenty of water sports and other activities to pass the time with. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: They have a range of accommodations at the Intercontinental, mainly rooms at the main hotel building which come in various sizes and have balconies with garden and sea views, but also overwater bungalows with outdoor terraces and lovely views of Moorea Island just across the water. These overwater bungalows are in two sections. Eight 400 square feet/37 square meter units surround the resort’s motu (islet) where the lagoonarium and the main pool are situated, while the others are down a coast with a wooden walkway placing them a little farther out on the ocean. The latter are referred to as Overwater Motu Bungalows on the booking page and come with 400 square feet/37 square meters of internal space and an impressive 344 square feet/ 32 square meter terrace. The Lagoon Bungalows come in two sizes – the standard models are larger internally than the Motu Bungalows but smaller externally – 414 square feet/39 square meters indoors with a 129 square feet/12 square meter terrace. The Superior Bungalows, the pick of the bunch at this resort, are a similar size indoors but come with a 183 square feet/17 square meter terrace. The majority of the accommodation choices, but in particular the overwater bungalows, are tastefully designed and decorated, displaying a nice, subtle fusion between modern conveniences and traditional Polynesian styling. Though the overwaters are certainly cozy and romantic, the resort itself is busy and developed (as is the island of Tahiti in general) so compared to resorts on Moorea or in particular Bora Bora, some may find it not so ideal for an intimate getaway. Why We Like It: The 5-star, adults-only Likuliku Lagoon is an eco-friendly island paradise off the coast of Western Fiji, and the first resort in the country to incorporate overwater bungalows. We love that conservation is a big part of the Likuliku story. The world’s last wild population (they were assumed to be extinct until 2010) of Fijian Crested Iguanas to be found in the resort’s on-land sanctuary. Educational, expert-guided forest walks can be arranged. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: The aforementioned overwater bungalows, or bures as they are referred to in Fiji, sit at the edge of the fringing reef. They have luxury interiors but we like that the design is semi-traditional, and the materials are natural and local which gives them an earthy, authentic feel. All are equally sized – with 646 sq. feet/60 square meters of internal space and 334/31 of external. Inside you have one bedroom with a king-size bed and a lounging area that opens out to the furnished terrace and open ocean beyond. You have direct access to the water below via a small wooden deck and stairs and inside there are glass panels on the floor to observe the abundant sea life below. Their bathrooms too come with romantic free-standing bathtubs offering views over the lagoon. They are the most popular choice at the resort so we recommend booking well in advance. If they are though booked out you still have some fantastic on-land choices. Their 32 Beachfront Bures come with private courtyards with outdoor showers, and day bed pavilions and the Deluxe Beachfront Bures have private plunge pools. All are just steps away from the sand. Then there are the Garden Bures, which are broadly similar to the Beachfront Bures with the same day bed pavilions but set back from the beach a little with lawns in front and lush tropical vegetation behind. Why We Like It: Banana Island is an island paradise just off the coast of Doha which is home to Qatar’s only overwater bungalows, and one of only two overwater bungalow resorts in the Gulf region (the other being the Palm Resort in Dubai). All are three-bedroom units and cover a full 2370 sq. feet/220 sq. meters, so for sheer scale alone, they are very impressive. We find them also nicely designed, sleek, and very luxurious, as you might well expect from one of Qatar’s finest luxury resorts. Banana Island has a very highly rated spa and wellness center, commonly thought of as the country’s best, seven restaurants to choose from, and a host of leisure and sports activities both land and water-based including golf, tennis, ten-pin bowling, scuba diving, snorkeling, boating and fishing. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: They have a good range of accommodation choices all of which are spacious and luxurious. Even their cheapest rooms will be at least 500 sq. feet and display very high levels of comfort. Pride of place though of course goes to their overwater villas. They are, as mentioned, enormous with three bedrooms centered around a central living area, which has a giant TV and lounging and dining areas, leading out to a spacious, well-furnished terrace that also includes a private plunge pool. Their sleek bathrooms are noteworthy and come with especially inviting curved bathtubs. Each has also a small kitchen/kitchenette area which, though not a deal breaker of course, may disappoint somewhat we feel, especially when the rest of the villa is so bold and grand. They come with a microwave oven, fridge, and pod coffee maker. There are only 11 overwater villas in total at Banana Island and they can be booked out. If that’s the case the rest of the accommodation doesn’t have to be such a downgrade, our favorite alternative in such a case would be the ‘Two Bedroom Luxury Sea View Pool Villa’. A Premier Overwater Bungalow Experience This 5 star Sandals’ resort opened the very first overwater bungalows in St. Lucia back in 2017, and they still remain one of just a handful of luxury overwater bungalow resorts in the Caribbean. So, not a lot of competition, and there are only only nine of them, so make reservations as early as you can. They all come with glass floor panels that allow us to peer into the sea beneath your feet, tranquility soaking tubs, private patios, and over-water hammocks amongst other special features. They also have a 24-hour personal butler service and the service throughout the resort is excellent. Sandals Grande St. Lucian is, like all Sandals resorts, 5-star, all-inclusive, and strictly adults-only.   Luxury Overwater Accommodation Plus Beachside Suites We have an enormous range of accommodation to choose from here, with the above-mentioned overwater accommodation absolutely the most popular. These have a spacious, luxurious feel with hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings, king-size beds with soft linens and plush pillows, smart TVs, sun decks, outdoor showers, swish bathrooms, and personal butler service. Many of the other choices will match, if not surpass, the style and sophistication of the overwaters though just without the novelty of having the ocean directly under our feet. Why We Like It: Sun Siyam Iru Fushi is an award-winning 5-star all-inclusive with overwater bungalows on a stunning private island in The Maldives’ Noonu Atoll. The resort has a great reputation for family vacations, winning the World Travel Awards’ category of Best Family Resort in the Indian Ocean for three years running from 2016 to 2019, while also being nominated multiple times for the world’s best family resort. We find it’s also a popular place for a romantic getaway too though – this being the Maldives adults/couples tend to dominate anyway. There are also dedicated adults-only zones and the resort is large enough to find plenty of space for rest, relaxation, and romance. It offers various options – b&b, half board, full board, and all-inclusive. For a multiple award-winning, 5-star resort in The Maldives, we find Sun Siyam Iru Fushi pleasantly very reasonably priced, with the all-inclusive being overall the best value package.   Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: It has a nice choice of accommodation on offer, villa style, around the beach or overwater. All of them fit a maximum of two adults and two children up to the age of 12. They are all as plush and comfortable as you might expect from a 5-star private island paradise with sleek interiors and a nice sense of open space both inside and out. Though some may deem the water villas too close to each other careful design means that even on their outside terrace they are still very private. The pick of their Maldives overwater bungalows are very much the ‘Infinity Water Villa with Separate Living Room’, all 1668 square feet/155 square meters of it. It, as the name suggests, features a separate lounge area and an infinity pool on the terrace. The others are smaller, though we couldn’t accuse any of them of being too small – your most basic choice will still be over 900 square feet/85 square meters. And though won’t have a private pool it will still have either a semi-open bathroom with a photo-worthy spa bath overlooking the sea, or a jacuzzi on the terrace. All their water villas also come with those classic glass floor panels so you can stare down at the sea life below from the comfort of your living room. Though they are a little on the small side it has to be said. Their Beach Villas are all larger than the water villas except for the aforementioned ‘Infinity Water Villa with Separate Living Room’, with a minimum size of 1378 square feet/128 square meters. Why We Like It: There may be a lot of competition in overwater bungalows in Bora Bora and indeed in the broader region of French Polynesia, but we think the 5-star InterContinental Thalasso Bora Bora is really quite a place. It is located on its own private island, a 20-minute boat ride from Bora Bora Motu Mute Airport, and it is hard to overemphasize the extraordinary setting, with the craggy peak of Mount Otemanu towering above and the most beautifully clear turquoise waters you could imagine swaying gently all around. It also has consistently high levels of service, great facilities, and a laudable commitment to eco-friendly and sustainability principles, all of which, for us, make it stand out somewhat from the rest and lend the place an extra exclusive feel. It is very much a once-in-a-lifetime vacation venue, and smoothly manages to be both family-friendly and ideal for honeymoons.   Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: The overwater bungalows and villas are in a choice position to enjoy the setting with their boardwalk jutting out right in the middle of the bay. They are also all exceptionally spacious; the smallest covers a minimum of 1020 ft² while the largest, the ‘Marlon Brando Suite’, comes in at a whopping 3465 ft². As you will see there is a great range of accommodation to choose from, most, but not all, of which are overwater. Of those that are overwater, they come with glass floor coffee tables from where you can peer down into the coral reef and see all manner of exotic creatures. Many also have their own private, on-deck, infinity swimming pools. We found the design and interior decoration a pleasing mix of modern and traditional Polynesian and they have all the modern facilities and comforts you would expect from a luxury hotel: air-con, WiFi, cable TV, music system, refrigerator, coffee maker, mini bar, some lovely bathrooms with bathtubs and rainfall showers, as well as plenty of lounging and dining furniture both inside and out. Room service is 24 hours and you can expect the absolute best in service throughout the resort. As mentioned above InterContinental Thalasso makes great efforts to be sustainable and not adversely affect the delicate ecosystem that surrounds it. Banyan Tree Mayakoba, Playa del Carmen is among the latest additions to resorts with overwater bungalows in the Caribbean generally, and the newest of only four overwater bungalow resorts in Mexico. Of the three others in Mexico two are very nearby – Palafitos El Dorado Resort and Rosewood Mayakoba – both of which are fabulous resorts and Banyan Tree Mayakoba matches them on all fronts. We saw it wins consistently great reviews for its eco-friendly principles, its choice setting, its luxury accommodation and facilities. These include a Greg Norman-designed 18-hole golf course and an award-winning spa, and gourmet food & drink. Their overwater bungalows are more European chalet-like than rustic Polynesian. The interiors are sleek, modern, and plush but with plenty of nice earthy, back-to-nature touches. They are set over two floors and we think they offer a much greater sense of privacy than most.   Lagoon luxury: Banyan Tree’s two-story overwater villas The above-mentioned over-water villas are all doubles with king-size beds and are very spacious indeed – over their two floors they cover a full 2400 square feet / 222 sq. meters. They have a heated plunge pool on the private terrace which has views over the lagoon. Their bathrooms are particularly nice with spa baths as standard. As with the resort in general, though they have a sleek modern design, the overriding philosophy with the overwater villas is harmony with nature. The decor and furniture are generally of wood or other organic materials and the many native Yucatan potted plants add an extra earthy, jungly vibe. We found these overwater villas an extremely popular choice, and there are only 6 in total, so expect to be disappointed unless you book well in advance. Why We Like It: The family-friendly Four Seasons overwater bungalow resort forms an exclusive enclave by the coral reefs to the northeast of Bora Bora. We found their overwater bungalows more modernist than most and they have the feel of luxury design apartments where everything feels crisp, clean, and new. All come with tremendous views over Mount Otemanu and the lagoon, the overwater bungalows particularly, and the resort itself is a pleasure to stroll around with plenty to do and see, and a cozy, friendly, atmosphere throughout. Though the vibe is, this being Bora Bora, generally one of romantic indulgence, We think the Four Seasons takes care of children better than most with a kid’s club and plenty of organized activities. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora has one hundred overwater bungalows and seven beachfront villas to choose from, ranging in size from 1070 ft² to over 3200 ft², with a maximum occupancy of 6 for the larger units. We think you’ll find them extremely comfortable, spacious, and beautifully styled with teak woods and pastel-shaded soft furnishings. The outside spaces are expansive and kitted out, with the overwater bungalows having private access to the water as well as outdoor showers, chaise lounges, circular daybeds, and dining tables. All the overwaters have internal glass floor panels to watch the sea life in the lagoon below too and some also have plunge pools on the deck. You can expect king-size beds as standard in all of the units as well as plasma screen satellite TVs, coffee machines, mini-fridges, music stations, etc. in the lounge areas. All the bathrooms come with nice, large, and deep baths with some opening out to the sea via sliding doors. Why We Like It: The El Nido eco-resort chain’s Lagen Island branch has a jaw-dropping setting, even by Philippine island standards – a picture-perfect cove surrounded by limestone cliffs and lush green forest. We think Lagen Island as a whole is spectacular and it is a known sanctuary for a huge variety of flora and fauna. If you’re any kind of nature lover we’d highly recommend the resort’s guided jungle hikes. It is a luxury resort (4-star), with a kind of barefoot chic vibe, and the accommodation, food, and service are of a very high standard. It has 51 rooms in total, a mix of what they refer to as Forest Suites, Beachfront Cottages, and their overwater bungalows which they refer to as Water Cottages. All are crafted from local wood, most of it recycled and, in common with pretty much all El Nido’s resorts, the accommodation, and the resort in general, feel authentic and seem to blend in nicely with the sublime natural surroundings, though mod-cons too are present. Water Villas & Other Accommodation: So there’s a total of 51 rooms, 18 of which are overwater bungalows or Water Cottages, 53 m²/570 ft² units that can sleep up to four. They have that nice traditional aesthetic from the outside, while inside they resemble more of a pleasant, modern hotel room. Modern hotel room conveniences include a minibar, WiFi, Satellite TV, Air-con, and an in-room safe. The bedrooms are connected via sliding floor-to-ceiling doors to furnished outdoor terraces. These overlook the bay and serve well as al fresco lounge areas. Other accommodations at El Nido are the Forest Rooms which include four large (70 m²/753 ft²)  two-story, Forest Suites that sit just at the edge of the forest and feel secluded and romantic. Nine Beachfront Cottages complete the accommodation choices, they are identical to the Water Cottages but sit at the water’s edge as opposed to on the water and, like the overwater cottages, they have unobstructed views out to sea.   Sandals St. Vincent is the Caribbean resort chain’s newest resort, opened in March ’24, with among its broad accommodation choices St Vincent & The Grenadines’ very first Sandals overwater bungalows! They are also among the very newest overwater bungalows in the Caribbean, and seem to offer good value compared to some of the more established alternatives. They come as two-story units with outdoor decks with access to the water below, overwater hammocks, a semi-open air upper floor for lounging and dining, and glass floor panels downstairs. They are large too and have that space divided over two floors, giving more of  a luxury villa feel. The resort in general too is fabulous, and is shaping up to be one of Sandals’s very best. It’s more laid back and peaceful than many a Sandals, and feels more exclusive, but you still have twelve restaurants and nine bars to choose from. And the food is top class. The bar seems to be set very high from the start at Sandals St. Vincent. The eco-friendly & fully off-grid Sol Bungalows is a tiny, very intimate resort with just two overwater bungalows on Bocas del Toro’s Isla Solarte, the least populated, most undisturbed of all Bocas’ main islands. Though relatively undisturbed we find the location is still very convenient, being just 5 minutes by water taxi from Bocas Town. We think you’ll find the overwater bungalows leek, modern, and comfortable – they boast all the features you’d expect from quality overwater bungalows in the Caribbean but at a more reasonable price.   Sustainable Luxury: Off-Grid Overwater Bungalows Those features include; traditional thatched roofs, glass floor viewing panels, nice furnished terraces with direct access to the water, overwater hammocks, and outdoor showers. We think you’ll find the bungalows spacious too; they cover 775 square feet/78 square meters in total, with a lounge area, a separate bedroom with a king-size bed and memory foam mattress, a bathroom and a lovely outside terrace just made for gazing at sunsets. Other hotel-type niceties include coffee makers, mini-fridges, and blackout curtains. Why We Like It: The Float House River Kwai Resort is a uniquely romantic floating hotel in Western Thailand. These luxury villas are generally only reached by boat, and so offer very much the sensation of getting away from it all. This is not some primitive jungle camp though we hasten to add, it is a luxury boutique resort with overwater bungalows that are spacious and comfortable and equipped with all modern luxury hotel conveniences. Overwater Bungalows: Their villas are all two-bedroom, one double and one twin, and all almost identical; there are no ‘standard’ or ‘superior’ villas or the like here. Beyond that, your accommodation choices are B&B villa, with breakfast only, half board or full-board. Going for full board makes the most sense we think. We think the food included in the package is of good quality and even if it weren’t, as the place is so isolated, unless you bring your own food you will be spending extra to eat at the same restaurant anyway. The villas have around 90 square meters/1,000 square feet of space and have a nice, natural elegance; their thatched roofs, teakwood furniture, and natural materials allow you to feel at least a little in harmony with nature. If being too much in harmony with the deep jungle scares the hell out of you, rest assured you will have modern luxury hotel facilities too; air-con, mosquito nets, WiFi, satellite TVs, coffee machines, minibars, very comfy thick mattress with luxurious linens, etc. Apart from the two bedrooms you have a lounge area, very nice bathrooms with rainfall showers, and a private outside terrace with seating and lounging furniture. One of three overwater bungalow resorts near Cancun, Mexico – the others being the nearby Banyan Tree Mayakoba and Palafitos El Dorado resorts – Rosewood Mayakoba shares the same serene Caribbean coast setting along with high-quality accommodation, service, and facilities, in particular its award-winning spa. We found it a sophisticated resort and though it attracts a high-end clientele, there seems little in the way of snootiness. El Dorado Maroma, an adults-only, luxury resort near Cancun is home to the very first overwater bungalows in Mexico. We think it really is a tremendous resort, and sets the standard for other luxury resorts to follow. Its location sure helps though – Maroma Beach, Playa del Carmen – rated one of the Caribbean’s, and in fact, the world’s, best beaches. We think you’ll find accommodation wonderful across the board, not just the overwaters, and their gourmet food and drink are of the highest quality.   The Overwater Bungalows: Elite vs. Standard, Which to Choose? The overwater bungalows come with all the features we would expect from such a pioneering resort – glass floor panels, hot tubs, private infinity pools, outdoor showers, and direct access to the water below your feet. We have two basic types here – the standard Palafitos, with nightly rates starting at about 1300 USD, and the Elite Palafitos which starrt at around 1500 USD. They’re practically identical, except for one well…location, location, location. The Elite Bungalows face directly out to the open sea, offering better privacy and far superior views. The Standard Bungalows, by contrast, are located along the sides of the pier, closer to the shore or farther out, but facing the beach. As a result, they tend to offer less privacy and have partially obstructed views of the ocean. So, the overall experience can be quite different. The gorgeous Bacalar Lagoon –  Laguna de los Siete Colores – just inland from Chetumal, has recently become something of a trendy escape from coastal Riviera Maya. Previously the lagoon and the town that shares its name saw no more than a few budget backpackers for overnight stays. Now though it has started to attract a wealthier, hippie chic vacation crowd, with boutique hotels & wellness resorts opening up to supply the demographic. The Akalki Hotel y Centro Holístico was one of the first here, is still among the very best, and has Bacalar’s only overwater bungalows. These are, by a large margin, the cheapest overwater bungalows in the country but on that understanding we have to forgo the OTT opulence of the three other resorts with overwater bungalows in Mexico for something far more in tune with nature.   Rustic Romance: Back-to-Nature Overwater Bungalows Their 441 square feet overwaters, described as Superior King Rooms on the booking page are rustic and romantic. They are simply but elegantly furnished with king size beds, a sofa bed, seating areas and nice bathrooms inside plus large furnished terraces overlooking the lagoon outside. I think you’ll find them bright and airy and I particularly loved the giant thatched roofs and the much light and dark wood furniture and fittings. The Akalki Hotel is all about back to nature so mod-cons wouldn’t be a strong point. It is though a luxury hotel and you may not have say a mini-bar but you have 350 thread count sheets, a choice of feather pillows, Wifi (though can be weak at times), water dispensers, yoga mats, and kayaks amongst other things at your disposal. There is no air-con in the overwaters but they have fans and the building design utilizes the breezes from the lagoon to good effect. In the on-land accommodation we do, as it happens, have air-con. The accommodation here is very similar in style to the overwaters but slightly larger and can sleep up to four on two double beds. They are set well back from the shore and nicely secluded with outdoor patios surrounded by tropical vegetation. Why We Like It: Formerly Le Méridien The Westin is a new Marriott overwater bungalow resort that was fully renovated and rebranded in May ’24. Even after this fine renovation for us it doesn’t have the same show-stopping sense of opulence and scale as some other nearby resorts; the St. Regis or The Four Seasons for example. But, though the largest overwater bungalows at The Westin cover not much more than 540 ft², they are certainly luxurious, stylish and well-equipped. So we think if you feel having acres of extra space is not worth the extra premium price then The Westin will be for you. The resort is family-friendly, but sees mainly couples, and is generally very relaxed and quiet. We find it noticeably quieter in the evening than most other Bora Bora resorts. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: The Westin won’t have the same breadth of accommodation choices as some other resorts but we do very much like their overwater bungalows, for being are cozy and intimate, and for nicelt blending traditional Polynesian design with modern features including glass floor panels. The resort also offers similarly pleasant beach villas and suites. All the accommodations have some outside space with seating and lounging furniture, and in the case of the overwater bungalows – direct access to the water. King-size beds are standard at The Westin and all of the accommodations will be kitted out with modern necessities; AC, WiFi, mini bar, flat-screen satellite TVs, etc. Room service is 24 hours, there are also concierge and business services available, and the service throughout the resort is particularly friendly and personable. St. George’s Caye, Belize, is a scenic private island with overwater bungalows near the Caribbean’s largest, and the world’s second-largest, barrier reef. We think it offers adventure and excitement on the one hand (it is a popular vacation spot for divers for example) and peace and tranquility on the other (honeymooners come here too). The food is highly praised, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included in the room rate, the service is great and the atmosphere is relaxed, warm, and friendly. It sells itself as a luxury resort but we think the accommodation, including the overwater bungalows, though charming and comfortable, may be a tad underwhelming for the price range. Despite the oversell, though, we think the resort, the island, and the general atmosphere of the place make it a unique and very enjoyable place to spend time in.   Rustic Overwater Bungalows, Plus Beachfront & Garden View Suites We have a choice of broadly similar thatched roof cabanas, all doubles/twins in three different locations – Overwater, Beachfront & Garden, with the Oceanfront being the most expensive, the Garden cheapest, and the Overwater in the middle price range. In the vast majority of resorts, the overwater accommodation is the most expensive choice but not at St. George’s. This is, we imagine, because they are quite closely huddled together, in a half circle facing the sea, and therefore offer less privacy than other cabanas. Some people may like this almost sociable setting but if it’s a relaxing romantic sojourn you’re after then you’d be far better off in a Garden or Oceanfront Bungalow, with the latter being our favorite. All the cabanas are pretty much the same size (roughly 380 sq ft.) and design and are rustic, romantic, and cozy with thatched roofs and lots of native wood furniture and fittings. We have air-con and a mini fridge here but not much more in terms of modern facilities. Wifi for example is only available in the main building. Outside all have nice verandahs with hammocks and seating. Why We Like It: The 5-star, Sofitel Moorea Kia Ora Resort is a private enclave surrounded by crystal clear waters and pure white sands near both Moorea Airport and the island’s main ferry dock which has regular ferries running the hour-long journey to and from Tahiti. It is a beautiful place, and if you’re coming, as most people are, straight from busy Tahiti both it and the island of Moorea in general will offer the wow factor. The setting ticks all the boxes for a classic Polynesian island stay; balmy turquoise waters, powdery white sands (the beach alongside is consistently rated one of the best in Polynesia), and lush green tropical foliage, while the resort itself is small, intimate and oozes romantic indulgence. Sofitel is family friendly but it doesn’t have much in the way of specific facilities for kids. In general, though they will be well looked after by the helpful, cheerful staff. Babysitting/child minding services are also available. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: They have a range of bungalows and villas, mainly overwater but with a few beach and garden villas too, ranging in size from 450 to 800 square feet. All are sleek and modern in style with lots of polished wood, soft lighting, and pastel-colored fabrics, though also with that classic, traditional Polynesian look externally. The overwater bungalows at the Sofitel Moorea feel the most traditional in style internally and as such are cozy and romantic. They all come with outside terraces with lounging furniture and direct access to the water. They are the most popular accommodation choice and, though almost double the price of the cheapest, garden-based bungalows, we have to say they are worth the extra. You’ll find all the usual 5-star hotel facilities at the Sofitel, there is a concierge service here and in general, throughout the resort we think you’ll find the service is outstanding. Why We Like It: The InterContinental Le Moana’s overwater bungalows lie off Matira Point at the southern end of Bora Bora’s main island. The hotel is, as the name suggests, a sister of the InterContinental Thalasso across the lagoon which has a greater range of facilities, all of which guests at this InterContinental can access via shuttle boat. We think it doesn’t have the same broad choice of accommodation as its sister hotel and we think many will also consider the Thalasso branch as having a more scenic location, as it looks directly across the lagoon at the towering Mount Otemanu. Intercontinental Le Moana also has an extremely idyllic location though we must admit, nestling snugly as it does between the gorgeous white sands of Matira Point and the lush tropical hills behind. It also offers equal amounts of luxury, service, and style, and has an understated charm that may be lacking in the larger resort. We think its smaller size, more convivial atmosphere, greater access to the main island, and lower prices may just make it preferable for many guests. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: The Le Moana, as mentioned, doesn’t have the same range of accommodation on offer as the Thalasso, nor are the bungalows and villas on offer as large. Their standard size is 560 ft² with the largest being only a tad larger at 670 ft². That being said we think they are just as luxurious and beautifully designed and decorated, and have a more intimate, cozy feel. So, if you don’t feel like paying premium prices just for extra space they will work out to a much better value. The choices are overwater bungalows and beach villas both of which are stylish and sleek, and filled with modern comforts, with the overwaters all coming with a glass-bottomed coffee table through which you can peer down into the coral reef. They also have gorgeous views out over the lagoon and the nearby islands of Raiatea and Taha’a, a positive also shared by the beach villas which sit right at the edge of the powder-like white sands.   The couples-only Sandals Royal Caribbean, near Montego Bay and just minutes from Sangster International Airport, was the very first overwater bungalow resort in Jamaica and indeed the first overwater bungalows in the Caribbean. The concept was an immediate success and the Sandals company soon followed with more at Sandals South Coast (also in Jamaica) and then, a little later, came their first overwater bungalows in St. Lucia. Sandals Royal Caribbean though was the groundbreaker, or well…water breaker, in this region, and we found standards high. extremely high from the beginning. It is a high-end luxury, all-inclusive paradise with a private island (where the overwater bungalows are to be found), top-of-the-range facilities, superb food and drink, and consistently great service. It also has a tremendous location: getting to most overwater bungalow resorts usually involves a long journey from an airport. But here we are, tantalizingly, not much more than 5 minutes drive (via the resort’s private shuttle) from Sangster International. Pro Tip: Book Sandals VIP Airport Fast Track service as an add on. This is where you their representative whisks you through the border formalities. It’s really worth it.   Private Island Luxury: Infinity Pools & Glass Floors We have a great range of accommodations to choose from here – from standard rooms & suites to, of course, overwater bungalows, which offer varying levels of space and luxury to suit most budgets. Their overwater bungalows, attached to a gorgeous little private island, were the Caribbean’s very first and set the standards high from the very beginning. We found them sleek, modern, and luxurious, and come with outdoor terraces, large glass floor panels, romantic spa bathrooms with bathtubs, and there’s an outdoor bathtub and shower on the terrace. They also have a wealth of mod cons, plus 24-hour room service with an exclusive in-room dining menu. As you will see on the booking page they are divided into two categories – those with infinity plunge pools and those without. Why We Like It: Nujuma, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, opened in May 2024 as the third super-luxury resort to welcome guests to the Saudi Arabian Red Sea’s Ummahat Islands. Inspired by the word Nujum, meaning ‘stars’ in Arabic, it is also the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in the broader region, and one of only seven worldwide. It’s a special place, then and the location sure is special too; on its own private island in the same Ummahat Archipelago as the St. Regis Red Sea, the first resort in the area. The design, the work of British firm Foster + Partners, is incredibly impressive, particularly their enormous overwater bungalows, of course. It’s broadly minimalist, with clean lines, graceful curves, and sandy hues that blend beautifully into this unique desert and coastal environment. You have some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the world right at your doorstep here. Only very recently opened up to tourism, it is one of the world’s most pristine marine environments. Tourism is a tricky business in such an environment, but Nujuma, along with the other Ummahat resorts, has made guarantees for its preservation.   Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: You have a choice of one and two-bedroom bungalows here, both overwater and on the beach. They are all broadly similar in style, spaciousness (and yup, they sure are big!), and features, but with a small premium being charged for ones that face the sunset. Connected to the shore by an elevated ring walkway, the overwater villas really feel far out to sea. You’ll spend most of your time on deck, we imagine, which has a large private pool, lounging furniture, and direct access to the fish teeming waters below. There, you have pretty much full privacy and panoramic views over the sea. And, with so little light pollution around, the sky at night is a very impressive show. One of now three resorts with overwater bungalows in Jamaica (the others being Sandals Royal Caribbean & Princess Senses The Mangrove), we can say that Sandals South Coast is our particular favorite among the three. It is a 5-star, adults-only, all-inclusive resort that offers Epicurean indulgence in luxury overwater bungalows. The resort, in general, is large and we find the amount, and quality, of facilities and activities on offer very impressive. The food is a particular attraction – we have a full nine gourmet restaurants to choose from here with food that spans the globe.   Plush Luxury Over the Water with Private Butler We have a wide range of luxury accommodations to choose from here – rooms, suites, and over-water bungalows/villas, all offering varying levels of space, luxury, and privacy. Their 1,100 square feet over water bungalows are suitably plush and luxurious and come with outdoor sun decks with soaking tubs and overwater hammocks. Inside we have glass floor panels, a plush lounge/bedroom area and particularly nice, spa-style bathrooms. Punta Caracol is an eco-friendly, overwater bungalow resort in Bocas del Toro, along Panama’s Caribbean Coast. It has just nine very picturesque bungalows over the water which have the aesthetics of old colonial jungle huts but with more modern comforts. We think the setting is sublime – a deeply remote spot accessible only by boat and surrounded by 100 acres of the lodge’s very own rainforest reserve, 98% of which is left completely as nature intended. We believe it is absolutely a place for relaxation and contemplation. The food is excellent and the staff are helpful and friendly.   Romantic Thatched Roof, Overwater Bungalows with Terraces They have just nine bungalows in total, divided into three categories – Standard Suites, Luna Suites, and Master Suites. The latter is definitely our pick of the bunch with 1076 square feet/100 square meters of open plan space including a mezzanine bedroom with its own outside terrace and wonderful views. Its two terraces cover a combined area of 646 square feet/60 square meters. The three Luna and the five Standard suites are broadly similar to each other, with the Luna just having that bit of extra space internally – 646 square feet/60 square meters as opposed to 538/50 meters but both have similar-sized terraces -269 square feet/25 square meters. Both also have mezzanine bedrooms but only their downstairs sections have a terrace. The terraces are a good size and are supplied with hammocks and dining and lounging furniture. It is there to be explored, by yourself or on guided tours, and here we can see and hear an incredible amount of local wildlife – sloths, capuchin monkeys, dolphins, and caiman to name but a few. The hotel also organizes other activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, dolphin-watching, visiting native communities, etc. as well as regular boats to and from the nearest beach, Starfish Beach, ten minutes along the coast. And you can also arrange private boat trips to some nearby stunning desert islands. Princess Senses The Mangrove Resort, opened in October ’24, to became the home of Jamaica’s, and the Caribbean’s, newest overwater bungalows. It is a top of the range all inclusive, 5 star, adults only complex designed to compete with the two, very impressive, Sandals overwater bungalow resorts in Jamaica. In classic, semi-Polynesian style, their overwater bungalows actually resemble quite a bit those of Sandals. The Sandals’ bungalows are immensely popular so why change a winning formula is what Princess Sense The Mangrove presumably thought. They are broadly similar in size but have more outside space and less inside. There is a front terrace with an infinity pool overlooking the open ocean and another terrace running along the side. You also have direct access to the water below and all the outside spaces are notably very well set up for extra privacy.   The Overwater Villas: Private Infinity Pools & Platinum Perks The resort itself is a more exclusive, little sister resort to the neighboring Princess Grand Jamaica. Overall you have a huge amount of 5 star facilities to choose from. Fourteen restaurants for example, with food from across the world including Jamaican, Asian, Italian, Steakhouse, international buffet and fast food food-trucks. There is a total of fifteen bars and one nightclub, a large water park, a fitness, spa and wellness center, and live nightly entertainment. Spa treatments are not all inclusive but guests of the overwater bungalows receive a 15 % Discount on spa treatments and products plus one complimentary access per person per week to the hydrotherapy area. So it’s a busy resort overall but The Mangrove sub resort is seemingly designed for those wanting a slower, more relaxed, romantic, vacation. Why We Like It: The eco-friendly Koro Sun Resort sits on a lagoon surrounded by a lush 160-acre nature sanctuary on the island of Vanua Levu, just to the northeast of Fiji’s main island. For us it’s a place with a strong back-to-nature appeal. If you’re feeling adventurous you can head out on some awe-inspiring jungle hikes or deep sea diving trips or, if you’re feeling lazy, just lay back and enjoy as much fine food, pampering, and relaxation as you like. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: We have a broad range of accommodations here, including overwater bungalows which actually float on the water, and larger, two-story, two-bedroom overwater villas in a semi-separate, private section of the resort. The overwater bungalows romantic and cozy at Koro Sun, and we’re happy to see the interior design that doesn’t stray much from a traditional Fijian bure. They are 377 square feet/35 square meters and have a small outside terrace with direct access to the water. The overwater villas are far larger and more modern in style and have a large upstairs terrace and a small deck downstairs with access to the water. They have a small round glass panel on the floor too, to watch the sea life below. While the overwater bungalows are an adults-only zone the overwater villas are family-friendly, hence Koro Sun is placed in both our family-friendly and adults-only categories. They also have some bungalows built along a natural jetty in the lagoon which offer direct access to the water. If all the overwater bungalows are booked out these can offer a pretty similar experience. These are also adults only. One particular favorite of ours though was the Mountain Top Villa, a grand, 5-bed colonial-style mansion that offers stunning views at every turn – over the jungle, the resort, and the wide open sea beyond. Why We Like It: The 5-star Pangkor Laut is a stunningly beautiful private island near Malaysia’s Straits of Malacca with a pristine rainforest ringed by dreamy sand beaches and crystal clear waters. For us it is one of Malaysia’s, and Asia’s, finest luxury resorts and as such attracts a sophisticated Malaysian and international clientele. We think you won’t not find any kind of unnecessary formality or stuffiness here though, the atmosphere is notably pleasant, friendly, and relaxed. Its facilities really are top of the range – Pangkor Laut’s spa in particular has won countless awards and is consistently named among the world’s very best. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: Their accommodation is divided into four categories: Garden, Beach, Sea, and Hill. The sea section is as you may have guessed where the overwater bungalows reside. All are one double bedroom and as stylish and luxurious as you might expect from such a resort. They also feel thoroughly romantic. We particularly liked the spa baths looking out onto the sea and the elegant wood-paneled interiors. At 55 m2 / 592 ft2 they are not really large enough to impress with their size – an extra few meters of terrace would be great – but overall they feel airy and spacious. Some of the overwater bungalows also allow direct access to the spa village for an extra 50 dollars a night or so. You’ll see them listed on the booking page as spa villas. The Garden Villas though beautifully internally decorated have a relatively disappointing setting. The Beach Villas are certainly superior and for not much extra money. If we had to choose something else beyond the overwater bungalows though we’d head for the hills – The Hilltop Estates, as they are described on the booking page, are really quite fabulous. So much so that if money were not a factor we’d choose them over the overwater villas for a very memorable romantic vacation. Tucked away in the hills surrounded by lush tropical forest they have an old colonial mansion feel and are the resort’s most private, and most opulent and expensive, accommodation. They come in one, two, three, and four-bedroom units and guests are granted a personal chef and private butler service. The Aruba Ocean Villas Resort, home to Aruba’s only overwater bungalows, and still one of a handful of overwater bungalows in the Caribbean, occupies a slice of tropical paradise near Oranjestad and the international airport. It’s an adults-only resort with a gorgeous location, good facilities, top-class food, drink, and excellent service all around. It’s also small, intimate, and friendly, and has none of the anonymous, almost industrial atmosphere of many of the larger Caribbean resorts. They have only three overwater bungalows at Aruba Ocean Villas, and they are extremely popular, so you’d be advised to book your stay well in advance.   Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: They have some fantastic, individually designed choices at Ocean Villas, all except one being doubles. The three coveted over-the-water choices – listed on the booking page under various names such as LouLou, Isla Alistaire, and Dushi Sue are opulent and spacious. They are also very stylishly furnished. Minimalists may shudder at some of the interiors but we found them to be atmospheric and thoroughly romantic. If the overwater bungalows are booked out you will not be disappointed by the other beachfront choices at Aruba Ocean Villas. They are generally smaller but they are also nicely designed, furnished, and equipped and have a nice cozy feel. All of the above are doubles but for larger groups/families there is the Sunset Villa which is a private villa about 5 minutes away from the resort center. It can sleep up to eight people over four spacious bedrooms. Why We Like It: The Cook Island’s only overwater bungalows are to be found at the boutique luxury, adults-only Aitutaki Resort. We think it’s a fabulous resort with a location to die for – it occupies a private island off the coast of Aitutaki main island, overlooking what many say is the world’s most beautiful lagoon. We feel it’s also an incredibly romantic place, ideal for honeymooners which make up a sizeable proportion of the guests. And weddings too are regularly performed at their beach chapel. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: We have a choice of luxury overwater, beach and garden bungalows here. The overwaters, at 70 sqm/754 sq. feet, are a decent size but still feel cozy and intimate. With their classic thatched roofs and breezy wooden verandas, they look nicely traditional too. Inside then, they have the trappings of a luxury hotel room. Facilities include extra large beds, air-con, satellite tv, mini-bars, indoor and outdoor showers, study desks and sun loungers. From the terrace you also have direct access to the immaculately clear waters below. On shore we have bungalows and villas of various sizes, some with private infinity pools, and outdoor showers, and sitting right on the beach. They have the same vibe as the overwaters – traditional thatched roofs, that romantic rustic ambiance and outdoor space. They also broadly share the same luxury hotel standard facilities. Resort Facilities & Things to Do: All the accommodation choices come with complimentary kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and bicycles for guests to use at their leisure. Other water sports can be arranged to with the resort, plus there are ample opportunities for ocean wildlife spotting – sea turtles, eagle rays and butterfly fish abound for example. The main restaurant here is the H.M.S. Bounty Restaurant & Bar, by the hotel reception and with sunset views across the Full Moon Channel. Complementing it is the laid back Flying Boat Beach Bar and Grill. The food in both is quality and features a mix of Polynesian and international. Other facilities include a spa, a gym and a games rooms and a swimming pool. Location: The resort sits on its own tiny private island, mostly covered in jungle scrub, just off the coast of Aitutaki.   There’s certainly no shortage of Maldives overwater bungalow resorts out there, but not many see the same number of positive reviews as Velassaru. It is an enormously popular resort and many of its guests happily return year after year. We think the convenience helps in fairness – we love the fact that this island paradise is just 25 minutes by speedboat from Male Airport. Its prices are a positive factor too – for a 5-star resort in the Maldives Velassaru offers very good value. It sees a mixture of guests: mostly couples on romantic sojourns but also families. A drawback may be that it can get pretty busy, by Maldives standards anyway. Some may call it lively or vibrant though, and much prefer it that way. It’s certainly not any kind of wild party resort though either and we find it’s easy to wander off around the island and quickly find yourself alone with the sea. You have three meal packages to choose from at Velassaru: Breakfast included, breakfast and dinner included, or breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Velassaru Maldives is a family-friendly resort but children are not allowed to stay in the water villas hence we have it placed in our adults-only water villas category.   Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: You have many choices here, both on land and overwater, and all offer smooth, modern interior design and understated luxury. The water villas are for adults only and come in three classes: 861 square feet/80 square meter ‘Water Bungalows’ with infinity plunge pools on the deck, 1205 square feet/112 square meter ‘Water Villas’ some with pools, some without, and then their premium 2906 square feet/270 square meters ‘Water Suites.’ Naturally the latter are the pick of the bunch. The space can almost seem excessive though for an intimate couples’ getaway. Unless cost is not a factor, a step below – the Water Villas with pool – will offer a reasonably similar experience for a more reasonable price. We think all the villas at Velassaru Maldives are really quite beautiful, and though it may feel needless with the warm waters of the Indian Ocean directly beneath you, having an infinity pool on the deck adds greatly to the aesthetic and is worth the extra, we feel. All modern luxury hotel conveniences you can imagine are included here, including 24-hour room service. The Water Suite clients also get a personal butler for the duration of their stay. On land we like their beach villas; they have a rustic tropical feel with high ceilings and thatched roofs. Why We Like It: DoubleTree by Hilton Noumea Ilot Maitre Resort has New Caledonia’s only overwater bungalows and, as it happens, the closest overwater bungalows to Australia. We think the overwater bungalows and the resort, in general, are the kind of luxury that you might expect from the Hilton chain, and then some. The setting, a private island nature reserve in Anse Vata Bay, twenty minutes by boat from Noumea, is incredibly idyllic. Sea life is abundant here, with the island being an important habitat for sea turtles. DoubleTree by Hilton Noumea Ilot Maitre Resort is family friendly though the majority of those in the overwater bungalows seem to be couples of all ages. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: Twenty-five in total, their 600 square feet overwater bungalows have a separate lounge with a queen-size sofa bed and a bedroom with king-size bed, so can sleep up to four. We find the bathrooms lovely, and very spacious, and come with bathtubs, rain showers, and Crabtree and Evelyn bath amenities. The nice timber framed ceilings give the accommodation a traditional touch but in general, we find them quite modern in style. They somewhat give the impression of a swanky urban apartment but with lovely ocean views from the windows. They are also less open to the elements than many overwater bungalows though they do have a nice open terrace with direct access to the water. The bungalows are also fairly well-spaced apart and offer a good deal of privacy. As you will see on the booking page here, you have a choice of Standard and Deluxe units. These are identical except that the Deluxe units are best positioned for open ocean views and those famously beautiful New Caledonia sunsets. As we might expect, the bungalows are the most expensive option at DoubleTree by Hilton Noumea Ilot Maitre. Despite that, again as we might expect though, they are the most popular option and so can be booked out well in advance. On land though we have more bungalows with either views of the gardens or the beach. The latter are slightly more expensive but are just steps away from the beach. They are similar in style, and quality to the overwaters but quite a bit smaller at just under 400 square feet. All are also one-bedroom units but with a queen-size sofa bed in the lounge area. Again they are divided into deluxe and standard units with the only difference being location – in the case of the beach bungalows for example the Deluxe sit almost right on the beach. Why We Like It: The 5-star Le Taha’a Island’s overwater bungalows sit neatly off of a secluded private islet between Bora Bora and the famous vanilla island of Taha’a from where it gets its name. We find it offers pretty much the same tranquil, laid-back luxury as Bora Bora island but at cheaper prices. Cheaper prices or not, we think many may find Le Taha’a preferable to resorts on Bora Bora’s main island anyway in that it has an even more remote, paradise island feel. And it is a small, intimate resort that for us feels more personable and less corporate than many others. This is reflected too in its architecture and interior design – the accommodation, and the resort in general feels more traditionally Polynesian than most. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: Le Taha’a has 45 romantic, old-style wood and thatch overwater bungalows above the islet’s crystal clear waters, plus a range of cozy beach villas with private gardens and plunge pools steps away from the beach. This is 5-star luxury accommodations with all the conveniences we have come to expect but the decor is traditional Polynesian. It displays native woodcraft and some lovely examples of Tapa barkcloth – and so we find it has a more exotic feel than many other resorts in the region. The overwater bungalows are all 969 square feet/90 square meters, in size and broadly similar but priced slightly differently according to the view they offer, with a view of the iconic Mount Otemanu being the most expensive. There is also a small extra premium for the extra privacy of an End of Pontoon Overwater Bungalow which we feel is relatively good value. The beach villas are similarly priced to the overwaters but they are at least twice the size and so are worth a look. Their Royal Pool Villa is the most expensive accommodation in the whole resort but it is really quite special with roughly 2,800 square feet/260 square meters of space surrounded by its own private walled garden.   Soneva Jani is one of The Maldives’ most exclusive private islands and for us its overwater bungalows are uniquely spacious, stylish, and luxurious. We find the very largest of them, the two and four-bedroom ‘water reserves’ around the end of the walkway, really quite extraordinary creations. These opulent wooden palaces come with private pools, water slides, and retractable roofs that allow stargazing direct from the master bedroom. We like that most of the island is left natural and wild so, anytime the feeling takes you, you can have a wander through mangrove forests and deserted beaches, and feel yourself enticingly detached from civilization.   Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: The first stand-out feature of Soneva Jani’s overwater bungalows is their sheer size – all of them are spread over two floors and their very smallest one-bedroom units still cover 4477 square feet/416 square meters while their largest, the four-bedroom water reserve, covers a whopping 15295 square feet/1421 square meters. There are five other categories between those two extremes none of which will disappoint, we feel. All come with water slides from the upper floor if you’re ever in a hurry to get downstairs. Other standard features include large private pools, various glass floor viewing panels, study rooms, huge walk-in wardrobes, kitchenettes, and stunning bathrooms. The largest five sit at the very end of the pier by themselves with the largest of all – the aforementioned 15295 square feet ‘Water Reserve’ – being also the most isolated and private. Outside of the water villas you can also choose to stay in their two-bedroom beach bungalow hidden away in the mangrove forests. It is titled the Robinson Crusoe Residence and comes with lots of very private space. Or you can also choose to stay in their very indulgent, 23-meter private yacht. It has two en-suite bedrooms and a glass-bottomed spa tub amongst other things. On Miniloc Island is the Filipino hotel group El Nido’s local eco-resort of the same name. It is something of a luxury resort, which we like, but we also like its laid back, unassuming vibe. It is eco-friendly too and feels more locally authentic than most resorts we’ve seen, with a dash of hippie chic thrown in. There are a total of 50 rooms, a mixture of beach cottages and overwater bungalows. The style is classic Filipino, its bungalows and on-shore cottages have walls of woven bamboo slats and traditional thatched roofs, and all of it blends nicely with the peaceful, rural nature of the setting.   Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: First we have the overwater bungalows, referred to as ‘Water Cottages’ or ‘Seaview Rooms’ on the booking page. On shore, what they refer to as Beach Cottages are, as the name suggests, on the beach, and then the more secluded Garden Cottages are a little further back. None are enormously spacious but are certainly cozy, and comfortable, and we feel they have an authentic, rustic charm, despite them being internally, relatively modern in style. It is also extremely beautiful and the El Nido resort, with those fabulous limestone cliffs behind it, blends in relatively unassumingly. We’re not surprised therefore to see the resort doesn’t have a whole lot of facilities, though they do have a swimming pool and a small spa. People come here mainly to explore the island we feel, and be closer to nature, both on and offshore. There is great snorkeling right offshore, where you can spot whole shoals of exotic fish. Scuba diving can be arranged, diving lessons too, and windsurfing and beach volleyball Hiking around the island, a visit to the local lagoons, and boat tours of other nearby islands are great ways spend the day at El Nido. Accommodation packages here include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with snacks and extra food being available for an extra fee. The food is excellent, both buffet and a la carte. Why We Like It: Stella Island Resort in Crete is a 5-star luxury, adults-only resort with a tremendously good reputation and one which is home to one of only two overwater bungalow accommodations in Europe (the other being at Palafitte Resort on Lake Neuchâtel, Switzerland). It occupies a private stretch of Crete’s north coast and offers, amongst other things, spa facilities, some of the very best food on the island, and the opportunity to enjoy many sports including tennis and water sports. The resort has various deals for you to choose from: You can go B&B/breakfast only, have breakfast and dinner included in the room rate, or go all-inclusive. In terms of value, we feel the breakfast and dinner included option seems the best, but only if you’re not a big drinker – drinks are relatively expensive here, so if so you might be better off with the all-inclusive. Stella Island is far more a romantic getaway than a party resort though we feel. Though there are many lovely bars, lounges, and restaurants to choose from but they close relatively early. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: There are 89 rooms, bungalows, and villas at Stella Island, and all are top-of-the-range. It is luxury accommodation but not in any kind of garish way. We find all very elegant and stylish, and exhibiting more than a touch of boho chic. Some rooms, on the first floor, have balconies that overlook the huge central lagoon pool while the ground floor rooms allow direct access to it. Their 12 ‘Island Villas’ come with their own private pools, and are relatively good value compared to the rooms. The overwater bungalows come in two forms the first, referred to as ‘Bungalow with Shared Pool’ on the booking page, are relatively small but beautifully designed, furnished, and fitted. They feel private, cozy, and romantic, and come with a terrace allowing direct access to the lagoon pool, and overwater hammocks. The second option though, listed as ‘Grand Overwater Bungalow with Outdoor Jacuzzi’ on the booking page, is far superior. They are spacious and airy with high ceilings and large terraces that also allow direct access to the water, and come with deck furniture, overwater hammocks, and, as their title suggests, jacuzzis. Why We Like It: All-inclusive resorts, be they with overwater bungalows or not, can tend to fall short when it comes to real luxury but Ozen Maadhoo is the Maldives’ finest example of how to get it right. We think it’s a really fabulous place: the setting is stunning, as is the accommodation, there is a generous supply of top quality food and drink and, if staying more than 4 nights, complimentary activities to enjoy too – spa treatments, scuba diving, and a meal at the resort’s very special underwater restaurant, just to give you an idea. All that plus very high levels of service make Ozen All Inclusive, for us, excellent value compared to other similar resorts in the Maldives. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: We have a choice between classic Maldives overwater bungalows and beach villas here, ranging in size from 85 m² to 285 m². They are all doubles, with king-size bed and a sofa bed in the lounge area if needed, with the exception of the large ‘Beach Pool Pavillion‘, which has two bedrooms – a master bedroom and one twin bedroom. The water villas are a classically romantic choice with direct access to the water and uninterrupted views as far as the eye can see. They also all have, amongst other luxury features, glass floor panels in the living room and standalone ellipse-shaped bathtubs that open up to the outside via sliding doors. The standard villas will not disappoint but the ‘Water Villas with Private Pool‘ are the pick of the bunch, having 1205 sq ft/112 sq meters of space and a nice infinity-style plunge pool on the outside deck. The beachside villas may not have that but they all have a private pool as standard and across the accommodation choices the interior design and decor is crisp and smart with sleek furniture, bright fabrics, and tasteful art pieces. Modern luxury hotel facilities are standard too with AC, WiFi, flat-screen cable TV, Segafredo coffee machines, and free minibars that are generously restocked twice a day. Why We Like It: Saudi Arabia has recently made huge strides in opening up to foreign tourism and this, the St. Regis Red Sea, which opened fairly in early 2024, is another example of such ambition. It is a high end luxury resort, as you would expect from Marriott’s St Regis line, and it is located on an absolutely gorgeous private island the Saudis call Ummahat. It has access to some of the world’s most pristine coral reefs and marine ecosystems, something both the tourism authorities and Marriott are, by all reports, keen to see be preserved and prosper. It’s all new for this part of the Red Sea so we hope this is exactly what happens. Accommodation is a simple choice between beach and overwater, with some having an extra premium for a sunset view. Standards of luxury are the same across the board, so there are no great price differences or bargain entry-level suites to be snagged. It’s a 5 Star resort and the whole places reeks of opulence and the service, and the food and drink is of the highest caliber (no alcohol available though!) You also have plenty of fun, and relaxing activities to choose from, including some jaw dropping scuba diving and very opulent spa facilities. Getting here is done very much in style from Red Sea International Airport. Contact the resort before you go to arrange. You have a choice between a 25-minute seaplane direct from the airport or a short trip in a luxury car to the airport marina for a 30-minute speedboat ride. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: Their overwater bungalows, which they term Coral Villas, are nothing short of stunning. They have, for overwater bungalows, a fairly unusual, round, seashell-inspired design, plus floor to ceiling windows that make them feel extra open and spacious. The interior design is on point. Luxury of course, but nothing ostentatious. The outside decks are particularly inviting too, and neatly arranged to ensure privacy and open sea views. All are practically identical except some command a relatively reasonable extra premium for a sunset view. Well, I say reasonable, but if you go for the sunset view, you’ll have to forgo the sunrise view, which the others get for free 🙂 And a sunrise or a sunset over the Red Sea are both pretty special, it has to be said. You have direct access to the sea below for swimming and snorkeling. The waters are teeming with life and ridiculously clear. All the overwaters bungalows also have infinity pools on the deck. Why We Like It: The 5-star, St. Regis Bora Bora was the setting for the 2009 comedy ‘Couple’s Retreat,’ starring Vince Vaughan, an extra publicity boost that such a confident, sophisticated resort really had very little need for. Its overwater bungalows are stunning and we’re sure you’ll be extremely impressed with almost everything this resort has to offer. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: The resort is spread out over 44 acres which includes a private lagoon and various beach areas. The accommodation is a mixture of overwater bungalows and beach villas, all of which are extremely spacious; the largest overwater bungalows and villas in Bora Bora in fact. The very smallest on offer at the St. Regis are 1550 ft² for example, with the very largest being a quite magnificent 3960 ft². The design and decor are mostly traditional Polynesian; airy and with lots of wood. You will have a large bedroom(s) with a super comfortable king-size bed, seating, closet space, and a giant flat-screen TV. The lounge areas have comfy sofas, another TV, and a minibar, and outside there is lots of deck space with lounging, seating and dining furniture, outdoor showers, and, in the case of the overwater bungalows, private access to the water. The bathrooms are suitably luxurious, and large, too. There you have a rainfall shower, a deep bath to sink into, and a choice of exotic bath salts and other pampering products. For us another nice touch is of course the glass floor paneling. Many, if not most, luxury overwater bungalows will have them, but usually just in one room. Here they have them in the hallway, the living room, and the bathroom. The overwaters come in various levels and prices as you will see on the booking page with the top of the range being their Royal Villas which are really quite magnificent and, surprisingly enough, are the only ones that have private pools on the deck. You have a private butler service at your disposal at the St. Regis and one of the best concierge teams around. Why We Like It: The 5-star celebrity haunt that is the Conrad Bora Bora Nui has perhaps the most opulent overwater bungalows in Bora Bora. The setting is beautiful – a private cove on Motu To’opua – it is secluded and thoroughly romantic, and for us the resort really has an extra touch of class, even by Bora Bora’s high standards. We think it also has a strong candidate for the world’s finest overwater bungalow, and that is the incredibly impressive Presidential Overwater Villa. Their hilltop Hina Spa has soothing treatments and tremendous panoramic views, there are four excellent dining options, a large infinity pool and pool bar, and some lovely stretches of the purest of white sands. The Conrad is family-friendly; it has its own Kid’s Club, but overall we think you’ll find the atmosphere is one of romance and indulgent tranquility. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: We have a total of 114 accommodation units at the Conrad, with a choice between overwater, beach, and garden. The Conrad, in its previous incarnation as a Hilton, was the first resort in Bora Bora to offer the now ubiquitous overwater bungalows and these are of course as plush and opulent as you may imagine. They all offer lots of space too, with the smallest on offer covering around 1200 ft². They have sleek and stylish interiors, king-size beds, and wall-to-wall sliding doors opening out to a large deck where you have direct access to the sea, lounging, and dining furniture, and an outdoor shower. Some, the ‘Pool Villas’, also come with an infinity plunge pool and overwater catamaran-style hammock nets to sink into. For us the crème de la crème of the overwater bungalows are certainly the two Presidential Overwater Villas. They are absolutely stunning two-story overwater palaces, probably the finest in Bora Bora. These are where A-list celebs stay when they’re in town. Feast your eyes here. The Conrad’s Beach Villas though are also quite special and compare well to the overwaters. Sitting on the beach, just feet from the water, they boast the same luxurious qualities and come with infinity-style plunge pools as standard, overlooking the sand and the sea. Then there are the Garden Suites. They are situated in the garden area just behind the beach. They are spacious and equally beautifully designed and decorated, though the ‘Garden View’ choices don’t have much of a view. The pick of them therefore are the ‘Horizon View Villas’ which are higher up on the hill and have terrific views over the resort and the ocean beyond. Why We Like It: Lily Beach Resort is a 5-star all-inclusive with overwater bungalows on a stunning private island in Ari Atoll, Maldives. Their all-inclusive plan offers a generous array of quality services, with a range of free water sports activities and excursions and lots and lots of premium food and drink. It is a well-known resort and consistently popular; people return here year after year, so we’d recommend you book well in advance.   Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: We have a choice of water villas, beach villas, and lagoon villas at Lily Beach. The typically Maldives romantic overwater bungalows come in two categories: their ‘Deluxe Water Villas’ have 1356 ft² of space including a private outdoor deck with a jacuzzi plunge pool. Their ‘Sunset Water Villas’ are a step ahead with 1960 ft² to play with, a proportionally larger deck and a larger pool, as well as a 24-hour personal butler service. All the overwater choices have our favorite feature – a section of glass floor panels to gaze at the sea life below your feet. The Lagoon Villas are at the edge of the lagoon and cover just short of 1000 ft², are secluded and private, and come with an outdoor bath on the terrace. The Beach Villas have a nice location right on the beach with a private deck and about 730 ft² of space for the ‘standard’ villas and 1463 ft² for the two-bedroom ‘family’ villas, which are effectively two interconnected standard villas. The style is modernist and fairly minimalist we feel, with the emphasis being more on comfort than fancy decor. Many 5-star all-inclusives let themselves down a little when it comes to food and drink, both in quality and quantity offered, but not here. Why We Like It: For us a strong candidate for the best luxury resort in Mauritius, the 5 Star Constance Le Prince Maurice, just an hour from Port Louis and its international airport, is a divine slice of paradise and one that boasts the country’s only overwater bungalows. There are just eleven in total though – eight junior suites and three particularly spacious and luxurious water villas – so we’d recommend you book well in advance. Though the height of luxury and beautifully styled we think they have one drawback, that is that they sit over a lagoon fish sanctuary. This means that though it features much interesting sea life, you are not allowed to swim just outside your door. Once that disappointment is overcome though we think these overwater bungalows leave very little else to complain about, and the Constance Prince Maurice in general is a truly fantastic resort. It has excellent spa facilities and a whole host of activities can be enjoyed including water sports and golf at not one but two different 18-hole championship golf courses. Though the resort mainly caters to romantic getaways, honeymoons, etc. children can and do come here too, and the Prince Maurice Kids Club does a fine job looking after them. Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation: Constance Le Prince Maurice has 89 suites and villas spread over 150 acres of stunning beach, lagoon, and lush tropical gardens. The overwater bungalows, as mentioned above, sit on the lagoon and are of two types – suites and villas. Both are beautifully designed and furnished in the traditional Pacific style and for us feel incredibly romantic. The only major difference between the suites and villas is their respective sizes. The suites come in at a respectable 753 square feet (70 m²) and have one double bedroom with a seating area, a lovely outdoor terrace, plus some very swish bathrooms. The villas though are over twice the size at 1,400 square feet (130 m² ). Along with a larger bedroom, they also come with a separate lounge/living room plus dining space, a whirlpool bath/jacuzzi in the bathroom, and a soak tub outside on the terrace. Beyond the overwaters the beachside accommodation at Constance Prince Maurice is equally impressive. Their Beach Villas with Pool being especially praiseworthy. You have a 24 hour butler and room service at your disposal  and the service in general throughout the resort is second to none.
